In the course of the first two August weeks we continued in distribution of second batch of material which comprises doors, windows and metal lintels in next three communities. Till today 141 out of 178 beneficiaries have already received the material from second batch and we have distributed 423 metal doors, 282 metal window frames, 1128 1,5-meter-long metal lintels for door and 564 2,4-meter-long metal lintels for windows. To meet the condition for third batch of material it is necessary to put lintels, fit the doors and windows and finish the walls till the ceiling by lifting them up about 40 - 50 centimeters. Because the beneficiaries accomplished this condition easily within few days, we concurrently could start distribution of third butch of material. In third distribution each beneficiary will receive one four-meter-long metal beam, 4 pieces of 10-meter-long metal beams, 27 pieces four-meter-long wooden planks, 16 six-meter-long wooden planks and one sack of 50 kg with cement. In third phase of construction the metal beams will be laid on the walls. The roof will be made of wooden planks covered with plastic sheet for water isolation and approximately thirty-centimeter-thick layer of clay mixed with straw. Beneficiaries have expressed appreciation about the thickness of wooden planks. Two-centimeter-thick planks instead of intended 1,5 centimeters, could allow them in the future to build first floor above. In the area, where the majority of houses have just wooden beams and branches instead of wooden planks, the houses built within this project will mean higher standard.
In connection with the upcoming presidential election in the country, the security situation could worsen next two weeks. According the situation in district all distribution and monitoring activities could be ceased for this period. After distributing second and third butch of material in last three communities (number two, three and four) we are planning to launch fourth (last) round of distribution which will comprise material for pit latrines. We can assume that the majority of beneficiaries will spend Ramadan (ninth fasting month in Islamic calendar), which will start on 21st of August in their own houses.
Receiving material from third butch, Ramatullah Mir Hasan from Qala-e-Nawroz village can spend this Ramadan in the new house. It will be his first Ramadan with his family under his own roof. He fled Afghanistan as a youth with his parents in 1992. They found shelter in refugee camp in Pakistan, where both parents after some time died. Following the fall of Taliban regime he returned with his own family back to Afghanistan to native village in 2002. Although his brother is wealthy, he untied relations with Ramatullah and he has been living with his five-member family in his friend house. In Pakistan he suffered the leg injury, so his breadwinning is challenged. Fortunately his cousin Hayatullah Dawdzai, who lives and studies at university in Pakistan has a vacancy and thus he has been able to come and help him with construction works. Hayatullah is also planning to return back to Afghanistan, but his situation will be different. With good English and with the academical degree of Master of Commerce he will be able to find a well-paid job in Kabul and easily provide for his three-member-family.
