But imagine a situation where you really don't have anything to wear - winter is coming and you only have one bag of things that you managed to take from home when you fled your home country to escape the war - the bombing, the persecution, the daily dangers of life.

There are around 60 000 such people living in Greek refugee camps. In the 3 camps in Thessaloniki where we are helping, there are 1,200. They are Syrian families with children who have been forced to leave their homes because of the war. They have nowhere to go, nowhere to go back to. In very difficult conditions, they have been waiting for asylum interviews, some for more than a year. This waiting is physically and mentally very difficult for them. HADRA Slovakia (see our new website www.adra.sk) helps in these camps especially in the area of hygiene - our field coordinator Zuzka and the volunteers who help her are in charge of distributing basic hygiene supplies such assoaps, diapers, toothbrushes, toothpastes, etc. Before winter, however, families in the camps also struggled with a lack of warm clothing. So we decided to “kill 2 birds with one stone”. In cooperation with ADRA Denmark, we purchased 10 sewing machines, fabric, wool, and crewel-making supplies for these camps and allowed the Syrian families to make their own, custom-made clothes for the winter, and come up with other ideas while engaging in meaningful activity.

What happened? Literally a miracle. Sewing and quilting became a big hit in the camps. Beautiful sweater patterns are knitted by women just off the top of their heads, from memory. They teach each other, they teach their children, they mend their torn clothes, they sew the blankets they've been given into pyjamas. They are stitching everywhere - all over the camp women, daughters, are sitting and stitching. It's literally therapy for them.

That's why on 1 November we launched a collection of fabric and wool for Syrian families in Slovakia. More than 200 people took part in it and several newspapers, radio stations, bloggers, companies and wool and cloth shops also showed interest. We collected a full large truckload of material and over 800 Euros, which we will use to buy more wool and fabric directly in Greece. At the end of November, our volunteers Miro and Feri took the collected material to the ADRA warehouse near the camps, from where it is gradually distributed among the Syrian families. They are always looking forward to the next wave and the fabrics that ADRA Slovakia will bring to them.

We are extremely grateful that, thanks to the good people who participated in our collection, the Syrian families in the 3 refugee camps in Thessaloniki will survive the winter not only in more warmth, but also with the good feeling that someone is thinking of them and helping them in their difficult situation. Thanks to the wool and fabrics they make their own clothes for winter, they are both warmer and cheerier. Find out more about it, how you too can help families in need and see our photos and videos directly from the field at www.adra.sk/nemamconaseba or on our Facebook page.
