Of the three attacks during July-August 2018, one case has been the subject of a criminal complaint, and in all cases the NAKA specialised police unit has been cooperating.

The alarming fact is that the assaults happened during the day, in the morning hours on the busy streets of Bratislava - on the way to kindergarten with minor children and therefore right in front of their eyes. In all cases, the attackers were men under the age of 30, speaking the Slovak language. Attacks of a verbal and physical nature in front of children can cause long-term trauma. STEP 3 project psychologist Barbora Kuchárová says: „Traumas associated with direct violence can leave children with deep wounds for the rest of their lives. Subsequent retraumatisation or post-traumatic stress disorder can manifest itself in depression, panic disorder or even suicide.“ At the same time, it is puzzling why women with children are attacked. In two of the three cases, a Somali mother with a 6-year-old child was assaulted, first with aggressive and vulgar shouting; a few days later, another attacker mowed down the 6-year-old child in the street. The third case involved an Iraqi mother with two minor children who was pushing a 5-month-old baby and walking her 5-year-old son to nursery school. A few metres away from the nursery, the mother in the pushchair was confronted from behind by an unknown man demanding answers about her religion/belief, country of origin, and subsequently abused her in a vulgar manner. The specific assailant only left when both the mother and her 5-year-old child responded by calling the police. Both female mothers wear the hijab.

The director of the humanitarian and development organisation ADRA Slovakia, Daniel Kaba, is concerned about the attacks that happened this summer and says: „The increasing frequency of attacks on our clients - women with international protection - requires more attention and solutions. Together we need to sensitise the public to the negative sentiments of society towards asylum seekers and asylum seekers, as well as foreigners and foreign women in general. We would be happy if Slovakia continued to be a safe and friendly country and if a certain part of the public did not perceive the few refugees in Slovakia as a threat.“

Emília Trepáčová, field social worker of the STEP 3 project, adds: „Personally, I don't think that the attackers can distinguish or differentiate between a person with international protection, i.e. a so-called refugee or not. The essential clash is the visible otherness, especially in the form of dress (hijab), religion, country of origin, skin colour. It is extremely sad and disturbing that attackers dare to attack a woman or a mother in front of a child, or even attack a child. In their rhetoric, some political parties and political leaders constantly appeal for the security of the country in the context of migration. The paradox is that some foreigners and foreign women do not feel safe in Slovakia, or are not safe.“

Text. E.Trepáčová, B.M. E.Trepca, E.M.
