Even those from Yemen

Recently, the International Rescue Committee published a list of ten low-income countries that will face a humanitarian crisis in 2019. These countries are already the source of two-thirds of the refugees and refugee women on the planet. Among them is Yemen, which has been embroiled in war for four years. We not regulated over the „refugee crisis“ on social media, but we are trying to help Yemeni families in a real way.

Last year, millions of people lost their homes due to both natural and man-made crises. In 2019, the situation will get even worse, International Rescue Committee Vice President Bob Kitchen warned the public. Some countries are in list of countries, plagued by humanitarian crises, appear several years in a row (Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, Central African Republic, Nigeria, Somalia), with Ethiopia and Vernezuela joining them more recently. The poorest Arab country (ironically oil-rich), Yemen, has been on the list for four years.

The struggle for influence after the fall of the dictatorship

For years, Yemen's oil has brought financial gains only to the ruling class and President Ali Abdullah Saleh. But after three decades of unchallenged rule, during the Arab Spring he lost its position and civil war broke out in the country. The ousted Saleh sided with the Shiite rebels of the Houthi Movement and thus took control of the north-eastern part of the country. They were backed by Iran and in 2014 they captured the capital Sanaa and other parts of Yemen.

Their advance forced Saudi Arabia and other Sunni allied countries to launch air strikes in 2015 to keep the rebels out of the city of Aden - the interim seat of the Yemeni government, in turn backed by Saudi Arabia. The pro-government forces consisted mainly of soldiers loyal to President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, as well as predominantly Sunni tribes and separatists in the south. The President had support not only from his neighbours but also from the wider international community, led by the United States. And so Yemen has been hit by a war that has now lasted four years and has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties, wounded and dead.

Blockade of humanitarian aid

Since the conflict between the internationally recognised government and Houthi rebels erupted in the Republic of Yemen in March 2015, fighting has left more than hundreds of thousands injured and tens of thousands dead. In addition, Yemen, a country of twenty-seven million people, is facing a humanitarian crisis in the places caught up in the fighting.

Bombing and constant fighting have destroyed the country's food production, making Yemen fully dependent on humanitarian aid supplies. However, Saudi Arabia's naval blockade is preventing food and basic necessities from reaching the country. In addition to the famine, an epidemic of cholera and other infectious diseases has been added to the famine in recent months as a result of water problems and poor sanitation.

However, neither the Yemeni government nor the so-called Houthis fighting it, according to a statement by UNICEF/UNICEF Regional Director Geert Cappelaer with humanitarian organizations do not cooperate. According to the UN, over twenty-two million people are now in need of humanitarian assistance, nearly ten million of whom are at imminent risk of death by starvation. Needless to say, hundreds of thousands of children are among the victims.

The crisis in Yemen has been condemned by the Pope

Pope Francis ahead of his historic visit to the United Arab Emirates called for an end to the crisis in Yemen, which also appealed to his upcoming hosts. „I am following the humanitarian crisis in Yemen with great concern. The population is exhausted by the long conflict and many children are suffering from hunger,“ the Pope told the faithful in the Vatican's St Peter's Square in early February. Until there is a peace deal and an end to the conflict, thousands of people will flee their homes, probably to Europe, to escape war and hunger. There, they will ask the authorities for protection and help, with the prospect of a new beginning and a life of dignity.

ADRA Slovakia is a member of the global ADRA network, some of its branches are directly involved in crisis relief on the ground, supporting the work of the team ADRA Yemen. Our Slovak organisation, in turn, works through an integration project with those who have forcibly left Yemen. The granting of asylum and subsidiary protection are two of the basic forms of international protection. Slovakia grants subsidiary protection in cases where the applicant has not been granted asylum, but there are serious reasons to believe that the person would face a real threat of serious harm if returned to his or her country of origin.

In ADRA Slovakia we implement STEP 3 project „Integration of people with international protection in the Slovak Republic“, co-financed by the European Union from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF). Within the framework of this project, our workers work with people who have been granted international protection (asylum, subsidiary protection) in Slovakia. Currently, we are working with one hundred and twenty clients of different ages and from different parts of the world, who are slowly finding a new job in Slovakia. In a few days, several families from Yemen will also join the programme.

How ADRA is helping Yemeni families

Persons with international protection are provided by NGOs (in our case in the framework of cooperation between Marginal and ADRA Slovakia under the STEP 3 project) with services such as: social, psychological, legal assistance and counselling, as well as financial support. Participation in the project is voluntary, but everyone participates in the project because there is no state integration programme in Slovakia yet.

A family of six from Yemen with the youngest member - a nine-month-old baby, for whom we were still looking for housing before Christmas, is joining the project. We finally secured it for them in Trnava, but there is not much in the apartment and it is not yet possible to function in it.

Therefore, we appeal to all the supporters of our organization with a request for help - to arrange it in a dignified way together. We need simple furniture for the flat, taking into account the age of the children (a cot; a high chair; a bed, even a bunk bed; dining chairs; an electric stove; pillows, blankets, duvets and sheets, as well as a pram). If you have anything from this list, please email us at office@adra.sk. Thank you in advance for your help and support.

Text: the ADRA team, Photo: UN News, ADRA Yemen

Read more about refugees, migration, integration (and our approach to them) here.

Nedávno Medzinárodný záchranný výbor uverejnil zoznam desiatich nízkopríjmových krajín, ktoré v roku 2019 budú čeliť humanitárnej kríze.
