That's why a global campaign has been launched to ensure that every child in the world goes to school, completes their education and is able to fulfil their potential.

Why now?

The global numbers of out-of-school children have almost halved since 2000. But this process almost stopped in 2012. Something must be done to ensure that all children, adolescent or young, go to school and complete their education.

Just today, they will marry 41,000 girls who are under the age of 18. Today, 15,000 children will die from diseases we can treat. Today, more than one billion people must survive on less than $1.25 every day. Today, 262 million children do not go to school. If we don't do something, they won't go to school tomorrow either. This will lead to more young girls having to get married, giving birth to babies with a higher chance of dying during infancy, and the cycle of poverty will spin ever faster. Let's not wait for another day to do something.

Campaign information:

No child should have limited access to education. No matter where they live. No matter that the government does not provide an adequate and free education. No matter that he comes from a poor family. No matter that it fled with its family from war. Regardless of gender, ethnicity or disability. Every child, anywhere in the world, has the right to go to school and get an education. Unfortunately, 262 million children, adolescents and young people do not have this right.

A child who does not go to school is more at risk of being exploited by people smugglers, army recruiters, early marriage, teenage pregnancy and child labour. Uneducated adults do not have the skills to lift themselves out of poverty and their children face barriers at every stage of their lives: the risk of dying as babies, malnutrition causes limitations in their mental and physical development, thus continuing the cycle of poverty and adding another generation. Without education, nothing will change. Disadvantages escalate and poverty continues.

Why are so many children out of school?

1. Outdoor environment:
An under-supported and inadequate education system almost certainly forgets the most disadvantaged children. Girls are at increased risk of not attending school if they are not provided with sanitation, dignity and security. Children living in rural areas, those living in poverty and those with some form of disability are much more likely to be out of school. Conflicts and other emergencies force families to move away from their place or country of origin, disrupting the educational process. This situation currently puts more than 30 million children at risk.

2. Family circumstances:
Poverty and lack of education of parents limit their options. They are often faced with the decision of which child will go to school and which will go to work (including forced), take care of younger siblings, take care of the household or get married (girls) while still children.

3. Discrimination:
Some societies, cultures and religions do not value every child's education equally, so some children face additional barriers because of cultural norms related to their gender, ethnicity, legal status or some form of disability.

Key stats:
⁃ One in 15 children in the world is out of school
⁃ 90 % children with disabilities in developing countries are out of school
⁃ Refugees (children) are 5 times more likely to be out of school than non-refugees (children).
⁃ 25 million children of primary school age have never been to school, and if current trends continue, they never will.
⁃ if all girls complete their secondary education, there will be: 49% fewer child deaths, 64% fewer child marriages, 59% fewer child pregnancies, and an educated woman will earn 45% more than a woman with no education.
- 131 million girls around the world are out of school. Girls are 1.5 times more likely than boys to be out of primary school. This means that 15 million girls, compared to 10 million boys of primary school age, will never have the opportunity to learn to read and write.

What hinders in education:

Early marriage and pregnancy
Girls who become pregnant at an early age stop going to school, even if they want to after giving birth. A third of girls in developing countries marry before the age of 18, and one in nine girls marry before the age of 15.

Remote areas
In developing countries, girls living in rural areas are twice as likely to be out of school as girls in urban areas. This is due to the fact that in more remote areas there are often greater social and cultural barriers, the need to work, and the barrier of distance from the nearest school.

Poverty
Poverty forces many families to choose which of their children will go to school. Often girls are worse off, as there is a well-known attitude that education is not as important for girls as it is for boys. Instead of school, girls are sent to work or stay at home to help with the housework, or their parents marry them off.

Menstruation
Many girls do not come to school during menstruation, or stop going to school altogether when they start menstruating. Girls in sub-Saharan Africa miss 20% of the school year due to menstruation because they do not have adequate sanitation or toilet facilities.

Girls who do not go to school are more prone to early marriage, teenage pregnancy, child labour, sexual abuse and the white meat trade. An uneducated woman is less able to make decisions about her body and life and is at high risk of problems associated with motherhood and childbirth (which can end in death), and is also more likely to have children who are malnourished and die as minors.

How will the petition be used?

We will use the petition to show world leaders that they need to take urgent action so that every child can get a quality education.

The petition is available online at https://inschool.adra.org/petition.
