Discrimination is present not only at an individual level, but also in the institutional environment, which often leads to many children dropping out of the education system and thus often not even completing primary education. This practice affects not only their education, but also their self-esteem and general social development.

In addition to discrimination, children from Roma communities often face a lack of basic material resources for education. They lack not only access to learning materials and books, but also adequate conditions for learning. Many of them come from backgrounds where they do not have access to electricity or heating.

A problem related to education is also, as in Slovakia, the lack of assistants in schools, or teaching in the Romani language, which is spoken by most of the children. The problem of frequent drop-outs and the lack of staff in schools is also something we have tried to address in our community centre.

Our extracurricular activities often focused on doing homework together, playing logic games and doing creative work. However, the main aim of our activities was not to replace the formal school curriculum, but rather to complement it and to provide additional explanations or motivation for the children to better understand the curriculum.

These activities have been extremely valuable to me. Learning together brought new knowledge not only to them but also to me. From learning a new language to seeing some things from a different perspective. We generally tend to generalize, but it was working with these children that made me realize how unique each one of them is. Each child in our group had their own potential and interests. Many of them were enthusiastic about engaging in different activities and enjoyed doing something different.

One boy was fascinated by a puzzle where he was able to concentrate completely. Another girl wrote a wonderful story, which she was happy to tell us later. Other children were delighted when they were able to teach me the Serbian language and the Cyrillic alphabet, thus practising their own writing and reading, or when, on the other hand, we were able to learn English together. Many of them showed their talents during the preparations for the Christmas pageant, when we practiced singing together. Each child was able to contribute their interests and abilities to our group dynamic, which was wonderful to watch.

An interesting example was a boy of about nine years old who came to our centre together with his mother, during my first week. Although there was a language barrier between us, we played a game together where he showed very good logical thinking. This boy regularly participated in our activities and gradually appeared very proficient in coordinating and helping other children.

However, these after-school mornings were sometimes a challenge for me. Concentration problems, made it difficult to coordinate a larger group of children as well as to keep them motivated. Lack of fine motor skills was also a big difficulty. Some children, even in the upper grades, had difficulty holding a pen or pencil, which made it difficult to write homework.

Working with children automatically required communication with parents. The vast majority of them were, in their words, enthusiastic about ADRA Serbia's initiatives and supported the children in their activities. On the other hand, it often happened that they forgot about the activities or did not prepare their children sufficiently, which made the overall organization and coordination of the groups difficult.

As in Slovakia, systemic discrimination, intergenerational poverty and marginalisation of Roma communities are complex problems that require cooperation at all levels of society. Nevertheless, I believe that even small steps can contribute to improving this situation, whether by increasing children's motivation in education or by creating a safe environment in which they can express themselves freely.

I would like to thank ADRA Slovakia and ADRA Serbia for the opportunity to participate in this project and for the opportunity to help in a small way to improve social problems.

. . .

Kristina's volunteer assignment is funded by the Official Development Assistance of the Slovak Republic.

O prekážkach, ktorým čelia rómske deti v Srbsku, píše naša dobrovoľníčka Kristína.
