Byamungu Therese
Age/Gender: By birth. 2014, girl
Parent/GuardianNyabandu Amboko - grandmother
Byamungu Therese is a semi-orphan and lives in Kyaka II refugee camp. After her father died, her mother could not cope with the trauma, and out of desperation, she started drinking, relapsed into alcohol and eventually drove all eight of her children out of the house... The children found refuge with their grandmother, who, despite her age and very limited resources, took responsibility for caring for all eight children. She does everything she can to take care of them, even though providing for their basic needs is a daily struggle.
YIDA school educators identified this household as particularly vulnerable. All eight children have dropped out of school due to lack of support, and the family often struggles to provide at least one meal a day. Therefore, the school decided to support at least the youngest child and re-admitted him to school without paying his school fees. Nevertheless, Therese continues to face considerable difficulties. She struggles to obtain school supplies and clothing to continue her education. The family's situation is difficult and the grandmother is overwhelmed by the responsibility of raising so many children with almost no reliable source of income.
Some of the older children fled to the city because their alcoholic mother was blackmailing them. There they are trying to find work. The grandmother has lost contact with them and is seriously worried about their safety.
