Strong earthquakes struck Sisak-Moslavin County in central Croatia on 28 December (magnitude 5.2) and 29 December (magnitude 6.4). The epicentre of the earthquake was near the town of Petrinja, 46 km from Zagreb, but the earthquake was felt throughout Croatia and in most neighbouring European countries (Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia, Italy, etc.).
ADRA Croatia assumed responsibility for the coordination of humanitarian assistance in 9 villages in the county of Glina. ADRA volunteers are already assisting in the distribution of aid and repairing damaged roofs of houses.
There were 7 confirmed casualties, at least 26 injured and more than 64,000 affected. The material damage is immense and many people have been evacuated, including patients from the local hospital. The situation is exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, as many people have fled into the streets. There is no electricity in the villages surrounding the towns of Petrinja and Sisak. Loose bricks and building chimneys are falling and many of the buildings have their structures compromised, including the hospital, kindergarten, shops, and are in danger of collapse. Search and rescue teams are still on the ground checking the ruins.
COVID-19 patients and other seriously ill patients were mostly evacuated to hospitals in Zagreb. The evacuees are currently staying in barracks, in their cars or with friends and in hotels all over Croatia. The area is focused on agriculture and cattle breeding, so many people are refusing to leave their homes to care for their cows, chickens and pigs.
The ADRA Croatia team conducted a rapid field survey of the needs and is coordinating assistance with the local municipality, the Red Cross and civil defence. The most urgent needs are: essential temporary roof repairs, temporary shelters at houses, fuel, food, water, sanitation, electricity, childcare, psychosocial support.
Aid from individuals and organisations is flowing into the affected area from all over Croatia and Europe. However, mobile generators, heated tents and mobile sanitary containers are urgently needed due to the power outage. Water purification in wells needs to be addressed.
ADRA is coordinating the distribution of aid from a central warehouse in Zagreb and has set up its own distribution warehouses in Sisak. ADRA Croatia, organizes fundraisers, works closely with the Adventist Church s.d. in organizing volunteers and distributing aid.
ADRA Slovakia coordinates its offer of assistance with partners in the field.
