Where the volunteer will be working: 

The Kyaka II refugee camp is home to 129,000 refugees from the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, and South Sudan. ADRA Slovakia has been operating here since 2020. We have built a farm, a training and volunteer center on the same grounds as a hospital managed by ADRA Uganda. We teach residents how to become food self-sufficient through their own gardens and help eliminate hunger and malnutrition among children. This humanitarian center provides comprehensive assistance in the areas of health, nutrition, and education in preventive healthcare and agriculture. 

The ADRA hospital has been operating here since 2022 and is one of two healthcare facilities serving all refugees in the camp. The hospital’s operations are overseen and professionally supervised by Ishaka Adventist Hospital, which has sent its doctors and medical staff here. All services are provided free of charge, which places a heavy burden on management and funding. The hospital’s services focus primarily on treating malaria, injuries, gastrointestinal diseases, and the effects of malnutrition; it also provides gynecological and pediatric care, with women and children making up the majority of patients. Most illnesses are the result of poor hygiene, extreme poverty, malnutrition, and a lack of preventive care and healthcare. 

Current Status and Statistics at Kyaka II Camp: According to IPC Acute Malnutrition (AMN) analyses: Chronic malnutrition: Up to 55.4 % of children under 5 suffer from stunted growth due to long-term nutrient deficiency. Anemia: Affects approximately 33.8 % to 44.1 % of children in the camp. Acute malnutrition: For the period April 2025–March 2026, Kyaka II is classified as Phase 1 on the IPC scale (Acceptable), indicating a relatively lower prevalence of acute hunger compared to camps in northern Uganda. Diet: Only approximately 4.1 % to 17 % children receive the Minimum Acceptable Diet (MAD), which is one of the lowest figures in the region. 

The aim of this project is to support activities in the health sector: strengthening the capacity of the hospital that serves refugees in the camp and on our shared grounds.

What the volunteer will be doing:

ADRA Slovakia has long supported the hospital by providing medical equipment. In 2026, we delivered and installed a SonoSite M-Turbo ultrasound machine at the hospital—the only one of its kind in the wider area. However, the local staff has no experience using it. Therefore, the priority is to send a volunteer with experience in radiology who can provide hands-on training to the local staff on how to use the ultrasound machine. The focus will be primarily on the use of ultrasound in gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and related fields.    

During the assignment, the volunteer will participate in the following activities:

• Launch of the Radiology Clinic – Ultrasound Examinations
• Training local staff to use the SonoSite device
• Assistance with patient examinations and diagnosis
• Assistance with minor procedures, treatments, and therapeutic processes 
• Participation in day and night shifts in the hospital's inpatient ward
• Support in setting up patient record-keeping systems and administrative processes related to treatment
• Assistance in preparing reports and data summaries for hospital administrative purposes
• Capacity building for local healthcare professionals in the development and use of available computer and medical equipment at the hospital
• Educating patients and local healthcare workers on hygiene and disease prevention.

The hospital has been expanding over the past year; an inpatient ward offering 24-hour services has opened, and it currently has about 20 employees. This is one of the reasons it needs to increase its capacity, which is the focus of our volunteer project.  

How volunteer service benefits patients and the hospital: 

• Sharing practical experience in healthcare, building the capacity of local healthcare professionals, particularly in the use of medical equipment—the practical application of ultrasound,
• Support for the digitization of management and patient care,
• Strengthening the team and helping to provide health care for refugees who cannot afford it.

What a volunteer gains during their assignment: 

• Experience in the field of tropical medicine (treatment of malaria, childhood malnutrition, etc.), which is not commonly encountered in the EU, is of great benefit to both medical students and doctors.
• The volunteer will work at the hospital as part of a team under the supervision of local medical professionals and healthcare workers. Throughout the entire duration of the assignment, the volunteer will have a supervising physician, a mentor, and a professional consultant to ensure the quality of the healthcare provided. 
• Upon completion of the volunteer assignment, the supervising hospital will issue the volunteer with an evaluation equivalent to the completion of a medical internship in tropical medicine, or, as appropriate, the relevant certificate, which serves as a valuable foundation for the volunteer’s future professional development in the field of medicine.

Requirements for Volunteers

• Physician—a graduate of a university medical program, or a medical student completing a clinical rotation after at least four years of study. A citizen of the Slovak Republic. 
• Knowledge and practical experience in the field of medicine, with a focus on radiology, working with ultrasound equipment, and diagnostics
• Willingness to work under challenging conditions in a hospital in a refugee area, where only the basic conditions for the hospital’s operation and the practice of medicine are provided
• Readiness to practice medicine under conditions of low hygiene standards among patients at risk of contracting tropical diseases (malaria, etc.) 
• Practical knowledge of English; knowledge of French is a plus,
• Independence, reliability, and the ability to complete tasks to the required standard and on time
• Proficiency in using medical equipment, computers, and Microsoft Office applications, 
• The ability to work and live long-term in a refugee camp in a remote area with limited contact with the city and European-style civilization.  

What we provide for volunteers:

• As part of the assignment, we cover: 
  • Airfare and travel expenses
  • Mandatory vaccinations (yellow fever, typhoid, etc.), medications, disinfectants, protective equipment
  • Visas
  • Insurance for the Duration of an Assignment Abroad
  • Pre-employment Medical Examination
  • A stipend to cover living expenses at the assignment location of approximately 800€ per month (the volunteer uses this to cover the costs of housing, meals, local transportation, etc.)
  •  Minimum Social Security and Health Insurance Contributions (except for students)
• Accommodations:
  Option A: We recommend staying on the grounds of the humanitarian center (a fenced-in and guarded hospital and farm complex; there is no need to commute from the city). ADRA Slovakia has built basic-standard accommodations for volunteers here. Minimal costs. 
  Option B: Rent accommodation in Kyegegwa (25 km, about 40 min) for a daily commute.
