Humanitarian aid for Lebanon

Walid El Hajj has roots in Slovakia. During the meeting in Beirut, he told me his story:

His closest friend was killed in a tragic car accident because the ambulance didn't arrive until more than an hour later. He can't bring his friend back to life, but he can make sure that no one else dies unnecessarily. That's when he made a life decision - to start a private ambulance service. It didn't stop at words. He founded the non-profit organization “Development for life and peace”, which has a team of volunteers, paramedics and doctors, they have ambulances, a clinic... They save lives and they don't ask if a person can pay for it. In a country that is in great crisis, this is a truly invaluable service.

On his last visit to Slovakia we met again and discussed how to help.

Together we can help most effectively.

When we learned that our MFA EZ was preparing another shipment of humanitarian aid for Lebanon ADRA Slovakia joined in. In cooperation together with our partners from Switzerland, we donated more than 800 kg of medical supplies and equipment. The St. Elizabeth College of Health and Social Work, n.o., the State Material Reserves Administration of the Slovak Republic and other donors added additional tons of medical equipment, first aid tents, blankets, folding beds, clothing and protective equipment.

Together we filled a shipping container and the shipment was worth €230,000. All the formalities - which are not easy - as well as the transport were arranged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the EZ and the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic. Our embassy in Beirut, in turn, took care of the customs clearance and receipt of the shipment at the port of Beirut. A good thing was achieved with our joint efforts. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic in Lebanon, Mr. Marek Varga, officially handed over the aid to the Lebanese NGO „Development for life and peace“ to serve its purpose.
