JAKUB, JÁN AND MÁRIA

Notes from the last visit of our farmers in Kenya

After about an hour's drive from our office, located in the border town of Busia, we get out of the jeep. Fortunately, the rainy season hadn't started yet, so the road was passable. Waiting for us is John, a tall, sinewy and smiling farmer in his fifties who looks 15 years younger. Jan shows us his farm enthusiastically and explains how he wants to expand his fields so he can grow even more sesame. We sit in the shade of a scraggly mango tree and hesitantly taste the fruits of the Indian tamarind.

A little sour, smiles Jan at our reaction. We can hear the emotion in his voice as he talks about how, thanks to the ADRY Slovakia project, he was able to grow and sell sesame seeds to pay for a semester of high school for his son.

Half an hour drive further we visit Maria, who gives off an incredibly positive energy. And there's a reason for that, Maria is not only our best farmer, she has actually grown more than any farmer. 500 kg/acre (about 4,000 m2) is a respectable feat.

„I have never sold 1 kg of anything as a farmer for the price you offered me.“ At these words I lower my eyes and realize that what we are doing makes sense.

„Everything just don't take pictures of my kitchen...“ laughs Maria when we want to take pictures and video before we leave.

Her children had to interrupt their studies after her husband had a spinal injury. They spent a lot of money on medical care. Now, thanks to the project, she is also trying to support them financially so that they can finish school.

Jakub is sitting in the cooler, waiting for us. A well-adjusted man in his sixties who already knows what he expects from life, he proudly introduces us to his son, who is studying management in Nairobi.

Not every farmer is like John, James or Mary. Not everyone wants to work, and sees the meaning in it. But it's wonderful to meet people who don't sit with their hands folded, but are actively influencing their future with what little they have.
