Kampala school in the slum

We visited a school in a slum on the outskirts of Kampala and met with children supported by HelpKids families from Slovakia.

Treasure Junior School operates in a slum on the outskirts of Kampala. It's the rainy season and the muddy roads are like soap. Fredy, the driver, had to put the wheel locks on our Toyota 4×4 (which he does only rarely) so that we wouldn't end up in a ditch like a few cars ahead of us. Eventually, though, we happily made it to the schoolyard, where it was already cheerful.

Child Sponsorship Programme HELP KIDS works great. We have personally met children who have sponsors in Slovakia. Thank you, my friends, for taking it upon yourselves to make such a long-distance commitment to give children in Uganda the most precious things in life: an education, plus clothes and a hot meal. Some of them have even been given a roof over their heads and are living in a school dormitory. They were extremely grateful and incredibly shy. Seeing three white people together was probably too much for them...

Director Mathias showed us again the dormitory where the children sleep. One room for boys, one for girls. And it was really crowded. Each child had a place on a three-storey bed with a mosquito net and a metal box for all their personal belongings. Difficult for us to see, for them the best they could get compared to the conditions in the mud huts... Nice and clean school uniforms wiped out all differences between the children, no one has to envy anyone anything and they play and learn together. And how it looks like in our school in real life you can see in a short video TU

Instead of personal luggage, we brought 5 large suitcases with toys, school supplies and creative games for preschoolers. All this was collected and prepared by children from Slovak kindergartens. Their photo is on the classroom bulletin board. The shining eyes of the children, many of whom were holding a real doll or car for the first time, are the most powerful reward. Now the preschoolers will have the opportunity to learn how to put puzzles together, strum the wind chimes, use coloring books, etc. The children in turn prepare their pictures for their friends from Slovakia and sponsor families.

The HELP Kids programme can be found on our website. You too can give one child the chance to receive a basic education in this school. Vic info at https://www.adra.sk/ako-pomahame/vo-svete/help_kids/
