Tasting water in Syria

Miles of pipes are already underground and water is flowing into homes.

An earthquake in Syria destroyed homes and disrupted water networks. ADRA Slovakia is implementing a humanitarian aid project directly in Lattakia, donated by SlovakAID. Our partners from ADRA Syria have made new connections in the Datoor district and the village of Al Russassye, which I was able to visit personally these days. Miles of pipes are already underground and water is flowing into homes. I have had the opportunity to meet the families personally in their homes and I have tasted the water and I can confirm that it is drinkable. Normally in these countries I don't drink from the tap 😊 but this water supply is Slovak, where the quality of the water is guaranteed by us!The conversations with the beneficiaries were nice, they were smiling, they were happy, I was smiling too, but apart from „Slovakia and ADRA“ I didn't understand anything, because they only spoke Arabic. So I'm still waiting for the translation of the video I made. People don't have to carry water from the neighbouring streets in buckets anymore and they are really grateful. More than 31,000 people have drinking water again, so I figured all the peripeteia, negotiations and incredible paperwork was worth it.More than a year after the earthquake, there are still houses in ruins, many had to be demolished and thousands of people are still living in emergency accommodation. We also visited several high water tanks, which had structural damage and were therefore shut down. With the ADRA Syria team, who are doing excellent work here, we have been surveying the situation and the needs in order to put together the groundwork for a new aid project. I also visited one of the reservoirs. Climbed it and it's an amazing observation tower with a 200m3 water tank. So together with ADRA Syria we are going to renovate the water tanks to give water to more people. It's complicated, but it makes sense for us.The new water network will provide access to water for more than 26,000 people in the Al-Datoor neighbourhood, where IDPs from Idlib, Aleppo and Lattakia live.
