Anet is an abandoned mother and lives with her young children in alarming conditions in one rented room in a damp shack in the outskirts of Kampala in the Nabweru Nord II area. This is a slum area where there is a very high concentration of poor people with no employment opportunities. Sanitation is very poor here, causing many diseases and health risks.

Family financial situation: Anet has four young children, but their father abandoned them because he fell into drugs and alcohol. The mother hasn't even known where she is for several years.

The mother tries to support the family with casual work, but is unable to pay the children's school fees. She is dependent on the charity of poor people in the neighbourhood.

Mary is the second of four children and should be starting school by now, but her mother can't afford it. Sponsorship support is needed so that she gets at least a basic education and also a hot lunch every day. Education can open the way for her to learn to take care of herself in the future.
