Aid in Greek refugee camps handed over

Curaprox toothbrushes help families in camps

Toothbrushes donated to families on the run by a company Curaprox Slovakia, were distributed during the summer in the Alexandria refugee camp (800 inhabitants) and in the Veria camp (250 inhabitants), where we registered an acute shortage of hygiene items. A team of doctors from the St. Elizabeth's University of Health and Social Work in Slovakia working in both camps, distributed over 1 000 toothbrushes for children and adults, and organised hygiene promotion workshops for children in cooperation with the Greek non-profit organisation Praxis. Adults, parents of the children, also came to see these workshops. Both the Curaprox toothbrushes and the training have been very well received and will enable people on the run to take even better care of their health.

Other toothbrushes were handed over to the organisation Help Refugees to the warehouse, from where we provide support to dozens of campsites and housing facilities. They are gradually distributed to refugees directly or through distribution partners (established volunteer groups). So far 200 toothbrushes have been issued from the warehouse, with a total of over 1,200 toothbrushes distributed to date.

The distribution of hygiene products by partners is gradually decreasing in the camps as ECHO funds are coming to depletion at the end of July 2017. This means that assistance in this form is much appreciated and much needed here.

Thank you, Curaprox Slovakia and St. Elizabeth's College of Health and Social Work for the great help.

Also the material for sewing and darning is a great help

All the wool and cloth you donated to our collection for Syrian families has been delivered and gradually distributed to people in need in Greek refugee camps - as we informed you a few months ago. The recipient of the €1,100 donation of wool and cloth is a small community centre in the town of Sindos near Thessaloniki, based Swisscross.help and since July led Three Peas. The Community Centre „Tamam“ (OK), plays an important role, as there are over 400 refugees living in the town in apartment blocks and without CC Tamam they would not have access to specialised services and spaces where they can come together as a community.

Supporting a sewing project is very important here for a number of reasons:

1) access to clothing is still limited due to financial reasons (for refugees but also volunteers, so we can't organize clothing distribution on a regular basis),

2) access to appropriate/preferred type of clothing (abaya) for women is almost nil

3) if clothes are distributed, they often don't fit, so tailors can adjust or repair them

4) women and men are building new lives, habits and need meaningful activities, they want to feel useful and self-sufficient and a project like this is exactly how we can enable positive change

5) all costs associated with running the centre are covered by donors and everyday people, so e.g. by providing them with sewing materials we save money for other activities and operational costs

6) CC is run by Georgina, a young unemployed single mum who receives a small allowance (volunteer stipend) for her work. So in this way we also support local people.

Thank you to all of you who participated in the #nemaconaseba fundraiser, including ADRA CR. Your help got into the right hands. Thank you for helping with us.
