On 11 August, a government special flight departed from Bratislava for Lebanon with humanitarian aid for the local population recovering from a massive explosion in the capital Beirut.
In addition to the official aid from the Slovak Republic, together with other humanitarians working in Lebanon, we were given the opportunity to send our own shipment of aid to be distributed by ADRA Lebanon. „Man in Danger“ provided food, „St. Elizabeth College“ and the Ministry of Health provided medicines and medical supplies.
ADRA loaded 1,000 kg of non-perishable food onto the plane. We were able to buy them thanks to your first contributions from the public collection for Lebanon. Rice, pulses, oil, salt and other essential supplies are already in Beirut, where ADRA Lebanon received them directly at the airport with the assistance of the Slovak Ambassador. Our partners are distributing food parcels to families in Beirut who were most affected by the explosion and are in acute need.
We appreciate the good cooperation of all the organizational units that took care of the transport and the necessary administrative arrangements related to this rapid humanitarian mission. The entire shipment was worth more than 60 000.-€ and the state aid added 100 000.-€ to address the acute needs.
Lebanon finds itself in a very difficult situation. The small country is hosting more than 1.5 million refugees from Syria. There have been serious political tensions in the country in recent months, with COVID-19 and the closure of the borders, which have hit the country's economy. The final straw was the tragic explosion at the port, which devastated much of the capital. Subsequently, the government resigned...
As humanitarian organisations, we know that we are facing a serious and long-term humanitarian crisis. That is why ADRA International already has teams in the country coordinating systematic assistance. ADRA partners from all over the world are organising collections and launching systematic aid projects. We are glad that even small Slovakia can be part of a large relief project.
