News from home (social services)

This week our other volunteer HELP TEAM is serving in one of the DSS in the Trnava region, where it is really bad... Clients are struggling with Covid, many employees are sick and medical and nursing help is needed.

The chairman of the ADRA board of directors (who is also the chairman of the Adventist Church in Slovakia) volunteered to help us, and together with a team of his colleagues and our nurse, they joined the front line to help at the bedsides of the sick. Several of the church's clergy have also received vaccinations in order to minister in an infectious environment. They also serve in the home along with the local pastor, who has also turned talk of love into acts of help. To feed, to give a glass of water and medicine, to help with daily hygiene, to encourage with a word - so simple and yet so difficult in the current situation...

Helping doesn't just mean giving up comfort or sacrificing a little of your free time. It is also about taking on the burden of responsibility and a certain amount of risk that I myself may become infected and ill while serving others.

One of our volunteers, who returned home infected after a week of service in the DSS covida ward, told me after two weeks of severe illness: „I don't regret being there at all. Even if I had known beforehand that I would get infected, I would have gone there again. I was finally doing something that was really meaningful. What I experienced in the service completely changed my outlook on life and real values. Everybody should try it...“
