The hustle and bustle at the Vyšné Nemecké border crossing was quiet for a while after midnight and the humanitarian camp was plunged into darkness.
The people waiting for transport spread out on the ground in tents, dressed as they came and showered with everything available. They settled down to a restless sleep to regain at least some strength.
We, together with the firefighters, fought with heaters all night, defrosted and replaced gas bombs, refilled diesel, solved fuses... to keep the tents at least somewhat warm. When I came out, the ash on my beard under my nose was freezing - the thermometer in the car showed -8´C!
Here and there the gloomy silence was broken by a child's cry or the barking of a discontented dog. Cooks and volunteers at the stalls served hot tea and hot food all night long and helped as much as they could. The bravery of these people is truly to be admired.
Over the morning, a crowd of refugees crossing the border for a few hours 
stopped. It was only later that we learned that the airspace on the other side had been violated and an alarm was raised in Uzhhorod. People fled from the border back to the city to take shelter in shelters. Fortunately, nothing happened and after a few hours the movement at the border crossing resumed. By the evening, more than 12,000 more people crossed our border... Women and grandmothers with children, old people, with a bag or a suitcase of their belongings. It is no longer just those who are fleeing for fear of the war, but whole groups of people who have survived the bombing first-hand, and many have nowhere to go back to. The warm rays of sunshine have brought our spirits back and we are grateful that it is not raining today either...
