In the morning it was freezing again and people who had been standing in the wind for hours in the queues at the border crossing came to our tent completely exhausted to at least warm up a bit and get warm before the next journey.
Another group of ADRA volunteers is helping on the border with Ukraine in Vyshne Nemetsk. Over 100,000 people have crossed the border into Slovakia in recent days. Volunteers are providing shelter, warmth, refreshments, a children's program, transportation to the towns, etc. in our rest zone. It is an advantage that many of them speak Ukrainian.
At night, one of the large tents had to become a place to isolate a family with seven children who developed covid-19.
The most touching sight is that of children trying to encourage their younger siblings. Our volunteers give them time, toys, try to entertain them and at least for a moment put a smile on their faces. The children are disoriented because of the many strangers, the cold, the unfamiliar surroundings, and the obvious stress of the mothers they are traveling with. Fathers are not allowed to cross the border to defend their homeland. Hearing some of them cry makes me want to scream: „People! What have these children done to you?!“
The yellow van, which was lent to us more than a year ago by our donors from SPP distribution, is faithfully serving and bringing new supplies of material aid, toys, clothes and refreshments - all from our donors and selfless people from all over Slovakia. Thank you!
We also cooperate with professionals from the Crisis Intervention Team who provide first psychological help. Today, clowns from the Red Nose came to cheer up the children and adults and help them to forget at least for a while...
