Water for Syria

In Latakia, which was affected by last year's earthquake, we continue to repair water pipes.

The new water network will provide access to water for more than 26,000 people in the Al-Datoor neighbourhood, which is home to IDPs from Idlib, Aleppo and Lattakia.

Northern Syria has long faced a serious water access problem. In many households, water never flows and elsewhere water supplies are limited due to earthquake damage to pipes. People are often forced to buy water from alternative sources, but these are expensive and not always safe.

As part of our project, we are working to repair 2,500 metres of water pipes in three main streets in the Al-Datoor neighbourhood. Once the replacement is complete, households will use water every two days for four hours a day, which should amount to 50 litres per person per day.

Rehabilitation of water networks will help residents to avoid relying on obtaining water from untested, often unsafe, water sources and will significantly reduce the purchase and distribution of water in plastic containers.
