Itibo is a humanitarian and development programme in a health facility in the south-western highlands of Kenya under the auspices of ADRA Czech Republic. It is aimed at providing health care and raising its level, as well as educating health personnel.
The programme was launched in 2005. ADRA Slovakia joined the programme in 2019 with the following activities:
- ensuring a constant source of electricity through photovoltaics and generators (because it is difficult to operate with a headlamp when the power goes out at any time without warning),
- an opportunity for doctors and medics from Slovakia to complete internships at the Itibo Kenya Health Centre (because tropical medicine in practice is a tough but useful school)
- help to build and equip an emergency medicine department (because fast, high-quality help saves lives),
- provision of medical devices and equipment for the new departments of the hospital (because medical devices should not be a luxury, but the basis for good diagnosis and treatment),
Why did we choose this programme?
Sub-Saharan Africa is a beautiful but very poor part of the world. Most people here live below the poverty line, without regular access to drinking water, struggling with food shortages. The consequence is diseases that require medical attention, but it is access to healthcare that is below critical levels. Especially in rural areas of Africa, there are tens of thousands of people per doctor. Health facilities, if they are available at all, are in a very poor state of technical and hygienic condition and are inadequately equipped and staffed.
The Itibo programme cannot help everyone, but it helps many. Moreover, it gives the opportunity to doctors and medics from the Czech and Slovak Republics to help directly on the ground. Thousands of patients are treated at the health facility every year, hundreds of babies are born in the maternity ward, and people receive preventive dental care.
Results of cooperation between you (donors) and ADRA so far
Thanks to sponsorships and individual donations, to date we have not only managed to renovate the dilapidated outpatient clinics and laboratory, but also to build a dental outpatient clinic, a maternity ward, an intensive care unit, and diagnostic sonography and ECG units. Itibo currently treats more than 9 thousand patients annually. The number of patients at Itiba is approximately 9.9 million.

How can I get involved?
Option A: become a financial supporter of a unique programme
Option B: if you are a medical or healthcare professional (doctor, nurse, lab technician, pharmacist, etc.), go to Itibo for a one-month voluntary internship
How much does it cost?
The value of the entire project for the provision of backup power sources is EUR 45 000.
10 500 eur - power plant (generator)
The generator will supply electricity during a prolonged outage of the public power grid for the entire hospital and will charge backup batteries so that medical equipment does not shut down.
450 euros - backup battery ( we need 8 of them)
The batteries will supply electricity primarily to light the operating theatre, the intensive care unit and to run vital equipment during a 4-hour public grid outage.
150 eur - 1 solar panel (we need 12 of them)
An array of solar panels will supply electricity to the batteries to light the operating theatre, the intensive care unit and run vital equipment.
800 eur - energy regulator
The controller is needed to synchronize the backup sources
3000 euros - building a technical room for the generator, batteries and regulator
The generator and other important equipment must not be rained on or stolen.
1,200 euros - one-month internship in Itibo for a volunteer medic or doctor.
Induction briefing, airfare, insurance, visa, local transport, accommodation, meals and consumables.
