In the early hours of the morning, our six-member crisis team arrived in flood-hit Slovenia.
Coordinator from ADRA Slovenia, Greg, took us to the village of Okonina near Ljubno. This place was hit by a torrential wave due to extreme rains, which took everything in its path with it.
During the day we built a humanitarian aid centre in the middle of a green meadow. A local lady farmer willingly gave us her yard and also a part of the meadow, which she immediately mowed. We then set up our large capacity tent on this site, which became an emergency storage for humanitarian aid, a canteen and a dormitory for volunteers. Our Help Team Bus also serves as a base for the ADRA team. Deliveries of food and hygiene supplies arrive here. From ADRA Czech Republic a ADRA Austria we brought in several pallets of desiccants, high pressure VAP purifiers and pumps.

We are at the firehouse where the emergency heliport was built. All day long we are accompanied by the sounds of helicopters coming from several EU countries. The helicopters are supplying villages and settlements at higher altitudes where water has destroyed roads and bridges, leaving the inhabitants cut off from their surroundings. On the way back, the helicopters carry dead cattle, as it is the dead animals that pose a risk of spreading diseases.
Once again we are experiencing an intense feeling of charity and willingness to help. Volunteers return to our centre muddy but with a smile on their face after a day's effort. Dozens of other volunteers will join us during the weekend so we can get on with the distribution of aid.
We are all tired, but determined to help. Thank you all for your support!
- Stano Bielik, Director ADRA Slovakia
