ADRA Uganda is our partner of the Slovak Humanitarian Mission. We teach people to „plant trees“ and they help them to „build their own house“.
Since time immemorial, houses in Uganda have been built out of red clay, which is absolutely everywhere...
Bricks are formed from the clay, dried in the sun, placed on a pile, under which they are heated for a week to be fired... The bricks in the hearth are overfired, the second layer is fired just right, and the ones on the surface are undercooked... This method, however, has eliminated even the few trees that grow here.
That is why ADRA Uganda is implementing a project to make bricks out of clay, sand and cement. A hand press is used for moulding. No burning and destruction of the forest, a simple, quick and efficient method...
The guys make their own bricks themselves and in cooperation with masons they also build simple but quite nice and mainly purposeful houses. This is a huge improvement over houses built of clay and mud.
We also want to support this form of construction and use their bricks in the construction of buildings on the Slovak farm.
