They say money can't buy health. But when we get sick, the pharmacy and buying medicines is our first stop on the road to health. But what about people who live below the poverty line and can't pay for medicine? Don't they also have the right to be treated?
In Belgrade, Serbia, an estimated 10,000 people live on the streets or in makeshift housing. In addition to difficult living conditions, many suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart problems, as well as various skin diseases, wounds and inflammation. Inevitably, they need to take medication temporarily or long-term, but they do not have health insurance to help cover the costs. Without help, they are left with a steadily deteriorating state of health, which can have tragic consequences for some illnesses. The situation has been exacerbated in the last two years by the covid-19 pandemic. People on the street are in a risky environment and we know that it is untreated chronic diseases that are a serious complication in the event of infection.

Why do we help homeless people in Serbia?
Certainly, in Slovakia too, many people find themselves in the unenviable situation of homelessness. In Serbia, however, their situation is even more difficult because of the insufficient capacity of shelters and bureaucratic obstacles on the part of the state, which prevent them from accessing health care. ADRA provides homeless people in Belgrade with access to sanitation services and, if necessary, arranges for them to be examined in specialised health facilities. Every day, more and more people in need are seeking our help, urgently needing medicines and medical devices to protect their health or life.
What does helping homeless people look like on the ground?
More about our work in Belgrade in the following Serbian report with Slovak subtitles:
So we are already helping homeless people with access to sanitation and healthcare.
What are we missing? ⇒ Medicines.
