What happened
A strong earthquake struck with a magnitude of up to 6.4 has hit 28 - 29 December 2020 Sisak-Moslavin county in central Croatia. The epicentre of the earthquake is near the town of Petrinja, 46 km from Zagreb, but the earthquake was felt throughout Croatia and in most neighbouring European countries (Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia, Italy, etc.).
There were 7 confirmed casualties, at least 26 injured and more than 64,000 affected. The material damage is immense and many people have been evacuated, including patients from the local hospital...
Acute needs
Affiliate In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, ADRA Croatia conducted a rapid field survey of needs and coordinated assistance with the local authorities, the Red Cross and Civil Defence. The most urgent needs are: essential temporary roof repairs, temporary shelters at houses, fuel, food, water, sanitation, electricity, childcare, psychosocial support.
Mobile generators, heated tents and mobile sanitary containers are urgently needed due to the power outage. Water purification in wells needs to be addressed, livestock feeding needs to be ensured.
In addition to technical assistance, psychosocial support is also needed for the local population, who live in great fear of what else may happen because of the earthquakes...
Involvement of ADRA
Aid from individuals and organisations is flowing into the affected area from all over Croatia and Europe. ADRA Croatia has accepted responsibility for coordinating aid for 9 villages in the mountainous area of the Glina district. Groups of volunteers are distributing aid and addressing the acute needs of the local population. This is a mountainous hill area, many elderly people live here and depend on the land and animal husbandry. They cannot leave their homesteads, so they need help locally.
All damaged houses were inspected by structural engineers and marked (red - for demolition, yellow - for reconstruction, green - suitable for housing. However, the subsequent aftershocks were strong and for many houses completed the work of destruction.
ADRA Slovakia offered technical and staff assistance, but so far it has not been necessary, ADRA Croatia teams are managing the situation well. However, after the winter the area will need help with demolition and house construction. And there will be room for our implementation.
