Humanitarian volunteering
ADRA Slovakia is involved in the EU Aid Volunteers initiative, where we train and send European volunteers to low-income countries. Within the SuDHAV3 (Sustainable Development through Humanitarian Aid Volunteering 3) project we are sending volunteers to Albania, Georgia and Turkey. Our volunteers are assisting in project management, fundraising, as well as working directly with beneficiaries in their local host organisations.
Situation
NGOs in low-income countries often face a challenging combination of the need to help vulnerable communities and a lack of funding. The consequence is a low number of staff who face high workloads. Volunteers support their host organisation to help people in need more effectively or innovatively. Thus, they never replace locals, but assist them and bring new ideas and different ways of looking at problems.
Partners:
ADRA Slovakia, Adice (France) and Mondo (Estonia) administratively cover the projects, select, train and deploy volunteers, then mentor them remotely and monitor their progress.
Host organisations include ADRA Albania, NCCS (Albania), Merkuri (Georgia) and Small Projects Istanbul (Turkey). They mentor and coordinate volunteers a their activities directly at the place of posting.
The projects are funded by the European Commission and managed by EACEA in cooperation with DG EAC.
