UGANDA - food sovereignty

Food sovereignty project FOUR II
(Farming Opportunities in Uganda for Refugees)

ADRA Slovakia in cooperation with ADRA Uganda is implementing a project for the development of farming and gardening. Our long-term humanitarian mission is localized in the Kyaka 2 area, where more than 120,000 immigrants live. We will help local newcomers to be able to feed their families from their own gardens. Provided byWe enjoy seeds, seedlings, gardening tools and practical training.

From the end of 2020 until February 2022, we have built the necessary infrastructure on the farm within the FOUR project: a training centre with offices, a farm building, a well, drinking water and drinking water distribution, a greenhouse, a solar panel and we have also provided a tractor. In addition to the construction, we conducted training sessions on the farm, training 47 trainers who in turn trained 606 community members who then learned the basics of farming and established their own gardens.

The existing infrastructure also allows us toďbut it allows us to continue our activities. In addition to training, the farm is also used to supply the local hospital. This is managed by our partner ADRA Uganda. Thanks to you, our supporters, we have built accommodation units on the farm which will soon be used by our volunteers.

Situation

Uganda has received 1 400 000 refugees on its territory (2020 statistics, third in the world). How do they do it? For people who have fled to Uganda from Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan or Burundi because of political unrest, violence, war, drought and hunger, they have an unconventional solution. Instead of placing them in refugee camps, they have been given land in selected areas. On a 30×30 meter plot of land, the refugee family can build their own dwelling and grow vegetables and fruits for their own subsistence. Every metre must be used.

Partners:

Uganda has created the conditions, ADRA Slovakia knows how to do it.

The project in its initial form (FOUR I) was supported by SlovakAid. However, after the end of the initial project in February 2022, we are here to stay and continue to develop the ADRA farm and training centre as part of the FOUR II project.
